Blackfalds sits on Highway 2A about 13.5 kilometres north of Red Deer, between Red Deer to the south and Lacombe to the north, near where the Blindman and Red Deer rivers meet. It was called Waghorn after its first postmaster until 1903, when it was renamed for a hamlet in Scotland, and it incorporated as a village in 1904 and a town in 1980.
