    All About Blackfalds

Blackfalds sits on Highway 2A about 13.5 kilometres north of Red Deer, between Red Deer to the south and Lacombe to the north, near where the Blindman and Red Deer rivers meet. It was called Waghorn after its first postmaster until 1903, when it was renamed for a hamlet in Scotland, and it incorporated as a village in 1904 and a town in 1980. The growth since has been remarkable, from about a thousand people in the mid-1970s to more than 10,600 at the 2021 census, including a 48 percent jump in the five years to 2016. It is now one of the largest towns in Alberta and meets the criteria for city status. Most of that growth is recent two-storey family housing, which is exactly the kind of high glass and long gutter run our ground-based systems were built for. Those same high rooflines are why so many families book Christmas light installation in Blackfalds with us, and why construction dust here usually comes off with pressure washing in Blackfalds.

    Where We Work From

We work out of Red Deer and cover Central Alberta from there. Blackfalds and Penhold are short runs up and down Highway 2A, Sylvan Lake is about 25 kilometres west on Highway 11, and Lacombe sits 25 kilometres north. The farther towns run on route days: Ponoka up the QEII, Innisfail and Olds to the south, Stettler out east along Highway 12. Booking more than one service, or joining neighbours on the same day, keeps the farther trips efficient for everyone.

    LOCAL CONDITIONS

Common Exterior Care Challenges in Blackfalds

    Almost everything is two storeys

The growth that took Blackfalds past 10,600 people is overwhelmingly recent two-storey family housing. High windows and long gutter runs are the norm here rather than the exception, which is exactly what water-fed poles and vacuum gutter systems are for.

    Active construction dust

With subdivisions still being built out, homes near active sites pick up a fine construction dust on the glass that returns faster than in a settled neighbourhood.

Young subdivisions with no tree cover

New developments have young trees and open sightlines, so there is nothing slowing the wind. Dust and winter salt reach the siding directly.

A Town Built Almost Entirely on Two Storeys

Blackfalds grew from roughly a thousand residents in the mid-1970s to more than 10,600 people today, and nearly all of that growth is recent two-storey family housing. That leaves very few single-storey bungalows in town, and it means high windows and long gutter runs are the default rather than the exception on almost every street we quote.

Because the housing stock is so uniform, our crews arrive already set up with water-fed poles and vacuum gutter equipment sized for two-storey gable ends rather than adjusting on site.

    Growth-Town Seasonal Patterns

With subdivisions still filling in near the Blindman and Red Deer rivers, spring in Blackfalds means construction dust settling onto finished homes near active build sites, on top of the usual runoff grit from Highway 2A. Since the trees are young across most of town, there is little windbreak, so summer dust and prairie wind driven grit reach siding directly instead of being slowed by mature canopy the way it would in an older neighbourhood.

Fall and winter bring the standard Central Alberta freeze thaw cycles, but with less tree cover the gutters here usually need less debris clearing than an established town, just more attention to ice building up on long, exposed rooflines.

Freeze and thaw cycles through the winter
Hard water spotting and runoff staining
Prairie wind carrying dust and grit
Long summer sun baking residue onto surfaces
Siding, glass, concrete and eavestrough all affected

What Shows Up on Blackfalds Siding

New builds near active construction pick up a fine grey dust on the glass that returns faster than in a settled area, since bare dirt lots and gravel staging areas are still common nearby. Open sightlines across the young subdivisions mean prairie wind moves grit straight onto siding with nothing to slow it down, and winter road salt off Highway 2A adds to that on homes closer to the corridor.

A Short Hop From Red Deer

Blackfalds sits about 13.5 kilometres north of Red Deer on Highway 2A, close enough that we schedule it alongside Lacombe and Red Deer city work on the same route days rather than as a separate trip.

    Christmas Lights for New Builds

Because so many Blackfalds homes are new, we spend a lot of time designing custom light layouts for gable peaks and elevations that do not match a standard house shape yet, and we handle takedown and off-season storage so the lights are ready to go up again next year.

    Concrete and Driveway Wear

New driveways and walkways across Blackfalds pick up calcium residue from winter de-icing faster than older, more weathered concrete does, since the surface has not had years to cure and toughen against the salt.
